An introduction to English drama, focusing on the key dramatic works from the Elizabethan period to the 18th century, including plays by Shakespeare and Restoration dramatists.
Drama I explores the evolution of English drama from the Renaissance to the Restoration period. The course focuses on the works of major playwrights such as Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Ben Jonson, and examines how these writers shaped the development of English theatre.
Students will analyze dramatic structure, character development, themes, and language, as well as the historical and social contexts that influenced the plays. In addition to close readings of selected plays, students will engage with critical discussions on the changing role of theatre in society.
